Survey
The presence of the European institutions makes Brussels one of the most important decision-making centres in the world. In their wake, a whole raft of NGOs, consultancies, regional representations, media, law firms and many others have set themselves up in the city.
This development has had a major impact on the demographic make-up of Brussels: over the past few decades, thousands of Europeans and other nationalities have settled in Brussels, some for a temporary stay and some for the rest of their lives.
The Brussels Government is interested in finding out who the members of this International Community are, and how they shape their daily lives in Brussels. The Brussels-Europe Liaison Office was tasked with carrying out an extensive survey amongst expats who have moved to Belgium for professional reasons.
The survey asked for their personal experiences of Brussels: What do they find positive or negative about living in Brussels? How were they welcomed to the city? What do they do in their spare time? Do they know many Belgians? These are just a selection of the type of questions we’ll be asking.
All the European institutions supported this initiative, which will be repeated every 3 years.
The results will be published in December 2012 and will be used to write a report with recommendations from the international community to the Brussels Region.
The survey was online from May 2 until June 8. It was completely anonymous and took about 15 minutes to complete. The questions were available in English, French, German and Dutch.
