Gas, electricity and water
Gas and Electricity
Since 1 January 2007 the Belgian energy market has been opened up to competition. Consumers can now shop around to find the cheapest or greenest supplier. Further information (how to choose a supplier?, what to do during a move?, where to submit a complaint?, what about green power? etc.) can be found on the Brugel website, the regulator for the gas and electricity market in the Brussels-Capital Region.
Water
Only one water company supplies the Brussels-Capital Region: HYDROBRU. The IBDE (Intercommunale Bruxelloise de Distribution des Eaux) is located 70 Rue aux Laines, 1000 Brussels, 02 739 52 11 (only in case of emergency).
Whenever you move to a new place, you are to complete a form together with the new resident (of the place you are leaving) or the former resident (of the place you are moving into). The form can be downloaded from internet. Make sure not to forget to take down the meter number, the meter reading and the date of the reading. The procedure is free of charge. If it involves a newbuild or whenever the property has not been lived in for a long time (and the water was disconnected), a representative from the water company must visit.
