Who can vote ?

This page refers to the municipal elections of October 2006 and will be updated as soon as detailed information about the next elections (2012) is available.

 

 

European citizens living in Belgium can vote in the municipal elections on 8 October 2006 as long as they satisfy the following criteria:

  • They must be a citizen of one of the following member states of the European Union: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom
  • They must be resident in a Belgian municipality. You have to be registered in the population register or register of aliens in your municipality of residence before 31 July 2006
  • They must be 18 years or older. You must be at least 18 years old on polling day, 8 October 2006
  •  They must be entered in the voting register before 31 July 2006. You just have to fill in a simple form to put your name on the voting register. It only takes a few minutes to do.

 

How to register ?

  • You don’t even need to visit your town hall to register. You can simply download the registration form in Dutch or French

  • Once you have completed the form and signed it, you just have to post it back to your municipal administration.  Please also enclose a copy of your identity card with this form.

 

BEWARE : THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS NOW OVER, YOU CAN'T REGISTER ANYMORE FOR THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS OF 8 OCTOBER.

 

 

Important information

  • By taking part in municipal elections in Belgium, you retain the right to vote in local, regional, national and european elections in your country of origin.
  • If you register to vote, you will receive the notification to vote in your municipality. In the event that you are unable to vote yourself due to illness or travel abroad, you will be asked to inform the municipal administration. You will be able to grant power of attorney to someone else to vote on your behalf.
  • Once registered, you do not have to repeat this formality. If subsequently you no longer wish to vote in Belgian municipal elections, it is easy to unregister.
  • You have to register separately to vote in municipal elections and in European Parliament elections.
