Municipal Elections

The concept of  “European citizenship” was introduced by the Treaty of  European Union, or Treaty of Maastricht, in 1992. As a result, citizens of the European Union living in another member state have the right to vote in municipal elections in their place of residence. They also have the right to stand for election in the municipality where they live. Europeans living in Belgium exercised this right for the first time in the municipal elections held in October 2000.

The last municipal elections took place on 8 October 2006. As well as Belgians and Europeans, a number of non-Europeans were allowed to take part in municipal elections for the first time. But the criteria for eligibility to vote were different for Europeans and non-Europeans.

You can find here a wide range of information about the elections. However, if you have further questions, don't hesitate to contact us or visit the municipal election website of the Brussel-Capital Region  (French/Dutch) : www.bruxelleselections2006.irisnet.be.

This information is also available in German, Spanish, Italien, Portugese and Greek.
